Privacy
The short version
- Your financial data (transactions, balances, and budgets) is stored only on your phone. We don't keep a copy.
- Our account server holds only what it needs to sign you in and run your plan: your login, whether you're on the free or paid plan, and whether a bank is connected.
- When you connect a bank, that data passes through a licensed open-banking service (Akahu) and a thin proxy on its way to your phone. It is not stored on our servers.
- This website collects only your email and an optional note, and only when you join the launch list.
- No third-party trackers, no ad networks, no analytics that follow you around.
Who this covers
Kiwis Can is a New Zealand project, made in Auckland. Right now this is a pre-launch website whose only job is to let you join the launch list. The app is not available yet. This page describes both: what this website collects today, and how the app will handle your information when it launches. We'll keep it current as things change.
What this website collects
If you join the launch list, we store the email address you enter and, if you choose to add one, the short note about what you want from the app. That's it. We keep it in our database (hosted with Supabase) so we can email you when Kiwis Can is ready.
The signup form includes a hidden field that real people never fill in. It exists to catch automated spam, and anything entered there is discarded.
We don't sell or rent your email, and we don't share it with advertisers. The site makes no third-party requests as you browse: the font is served from our own domain, and the signup goes only to our own server. If you want off the list, email us and we'll remove you.
We keep your email only while we need it to tell you about the launch. If you ask to be removed, we delete your address from the list. We will also clear the whole launch list within three months of sending the launch email.
Our launch list is stored with Supabase. Your information may be processed on servers outside New Zealand by providers acting only on our behalf. We stay responsible for keeping it safe wherever it is processed.
What the app stores, when it launches
The app is built so your financial life stays with you. Your transactions, balances, budgets, and lockdown sessions live in an encrypted database on your own device, protected by your phone's passcode and Face ID. We can't read that data, because we never store it. Delete the app and that local data goes with it.
Our server keeps only the small amount needed to run your account: your sign-in, your plan (free or paid), and whether you currently have a bank connected. No transactions, no balances.
Bank connections use Akahu, a New Zealand-licensed open-banking provider. When the app refreshes your accounts, that data is fetched through a stateless proxy and passed straight to your phone. The proxy keeps the bank credentials off your device, but it does not keep a copy of your financial data. So your money data is stored only on your phone, even though it travels through that connection to get there.
What we never do
- No advertising networks, and no selling or renting of your data.
- No third-party analytics or trackers that profile you.
- No "help us improve" data collection switched on quietly in the background.
Your choices and rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. For the launch list, that means your email and any note you left. Email hello@kiwis-can.com and we'll sort it out. For app data stored on your device, you are always in control: it's on your phone, not ours.
Keeping it secure
On-device data is encrypted, with the key held in your phone's secure storage (the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore). Anything sent between your device and our services travels over an encrypted connection. No system is perfect, but we've designed Kiwis Can to hold as little of your data as possible, so there is little for anyone to lose.
If something does go wrong and your information is affected in a way that could cause you serious harm, we will tell you and notify the Privacy Commissioner, as the law requires.
Changes to this page
This is the pre-launch version. We'll update it as the product takes shape and before the app is released, and we'll change the date at the top when we do.
